Do you have a painful experience in your past and would like healing?
Have you experienced little to no benefit from previous attempts at therapy?
Many people that I have worked with previously sought counseling in order to deal with difficult experiences from their past, or try something new when other therapy hasn’t been effective. There could be a number of situations that may be at the root of this including experiencing a childhood trauma, participating in an abusive relationship, physical, sexual, verbal, or emotional abuse, or healing from a major loss in life. There are also times in life where we did not get things that we needed or should have received. These experiences can leave a lot of pain which can be helped though therapy.
What can be done to help?
In order to work with these situations I utilize a few different techniques that can be helpful in first identifying where the pain lies, as well as types of therapy that will help to remove this pain. Depending on the situation, I may utilize Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Air Network, Internal Family Systems, or even help a person utilize their connection with God to heal. I may use a combination of these therapies in order to effectively get at the pain and help it to heal as quickly as possible.
What is useful about the techniques chosen?

Each of the methods that I choose to use have a more experiential aspect to them. If you have been to therapy before and simply talked about your problems, you may have felt some relief, but likely still feel pain associated with the experiences. This is often due to the fact that painful experiences require a more experiential and less cognitive method of therapy. In general, the experience itself (and not just the understanding of the experience) needs to be connected to the more adaptive parts the brain which allow healing and transformation of that painful event. This will often occur by utilizing memory and other various techniques to help the part of you that went through the experience be set free of it and begin to heal in the needed ways.
Some things to consider:
- I work to proceed in ways that are the safest and most controlled possible. I seek to avoid just opening up painful experiences and allowing them to dominate that person’s experience. There are ways to avoid this and yet continue to experience healing.
- I seek to teach about underlying causes of the issue and how this relates to our brain and hinders aspects of life.
- This work can be extremely helpful for improving life quality and relationships. Often we are under the influence of these painful experiences more than we know. We don’t always see the pictures in our mind but still may feel the pain, anxiety, sadness, etc. in our body.
- This work can help remove unwanted identity statements that have been a constant struggle, no matter how much we believe otherwise. Often these painful experiences lock in the unwanted identity statements such as being a failure, worthless, unlovable, bad, etc.
- This work can help explain why we do the things we do even when we know otherwise.
- This work can be extremely useful in conjunction with therapy for addiction, couples counseling, or struggling with anxiety, depression or other mental health diagnosis.
